In late June 2023, Marseille's historic streets bore witness to a vivid display of civil unrest. The photographs taken on the 30th of June and 1st of July encapsulate the palpable tension between demonstrators and the French police. As protesters set ablaze bins and electric scooters and rubbish piles in a bold statement, their counterparts—officers swathed in full riot gear—fought to restore order and apprehend instigators. Amidst the stark contrasts of fire and tear gas, the raw emotions of both sides become unmistakably evident. Not without sadness, we extend our condolences to the family and friends of Nahel Merzouk. Our aim is to depict these moments with authenticity, respecting the convictions and duties of all involved.
